Whilst researching this recipe we found that the majority of online dog biscuit recipes are American.

They list ingredients in cups, temperatures in fahrenheit and include some seriously unusual ingredients - canned pumpkin, rice flour and unsalted almond butter to name a few.

As much as I love my dog, he doesn't have refined taste! After testing and testing, we fell for these easy homemade peanut butter biscuits.

With a few, good value ingredients, measurements for the UK cook and better still no need to haul the mixer out of the cupboard (make them by hand, they roll out beautifully every time), these are ideal for children to make during the holidays.

What's more, these dog treats can be stored in an airtight container for up to one month.

Utensils

  • Bowl

  • Cookie cutter

  • Baking parchment (or greaseproof paper)

  • Rolling pin

  • Baking tray

We used a bone shaped cookie cutter for our dog biscuits. There are lots of cookie cutters available but we loved this 8 piece set as it contains a variety of sizes in both paw print and bone shapes.

The cutters are stainless steel with a detachable plastic cover which is ideal and safer for children to use.

It's a great value set which can be used for biscuits and cakes.

Ingredients

  • 125g flour

  • 64g oats

  • 1/2 tbsp baking powder

  • 112g peanut butter

  • 125ml milk

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 tbsp apple sauce

Makes about 20 dog treats with an 8cm long cookie cutter.

Optional -- You could add 32g shredded coconut and reduce the oats to 32g- Substitute the flour in this recipe for oat flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat.

As traditional peanut butter often contains xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, look out for a dog friendly version.

We recommend Pets Purest Peanut Butter because it's 100% roasted peanuts. Not only is it xylitol free but they haven't added any palm oil, sugar or salt which is present in most human peanut butters.

Trust us we've tasted it, definitely no salt or sugar. Oh, and did we mention, dogs LOVE it !

Pets Purest are offering 10% off their entire range.

4. Lay out some baking parchment on a flat surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough until it's an even 1cm thickness.

5. Using your favourite cookie cutter, cut out your dog biscuits. If you don't have a cookie cutter, you can use a small, upturned cup or glass (if you add indents with your thumb, they can make cute paw treats)

6. Gather the scraps of dough, re-roll and cut until all the dough is used up.

8. Bake for approx 20 minutes (rotate tray halfway through) or until the biscuits have golden edges.

Remove the biscuits from the oven and set them aside to cool completely before giving to your dog.

Voila! Your biscuits are ready. Serve them right after or store them in an airtight container for up to 1 month.

You could use them as training treats on dog walks but we'd recommend taking them in a dog treat bag as they are quite crumbly.
