Athletics' Hogan Harris: Starting on Friday

Harris will start Friday's contest against the Blue Jays, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
The Athletics initially had Harris listed as their starter for Saturday's game and Luis Medina slated to start Friday, but they've now flip-flopped the order. Harris struck out seven while yielding three runs (one earned) over 5.2 innings against the Rays last week in his first start of the season with Oakland. That came after he permitted four runs in nine frames covering two extended relief appearances.

Athletics' Hogan Harris: Getting another start Saturday

Harris is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays in Oakland, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
The Athletics' decisions to designate Aaron Brooks for assignment over the weekend and to option Joe Boyle to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday after activating him from the injured list had already suggested that Harris was on track to remain in the rotation. Harris had previously made two long-relief appearances for Oakland this season before drawing a start in Tampa Bay last Thursday, when he struck out seven over three runs (one earned) over 5.2 innings in a no-decision. The southpaw has turned in a 7.67 ERA and 1.79 WHIP over his eight starts at Las Vegas this season and produced a 7.14 ERA over 63 innings in the big leagues in 2023, so fantasy managers should tread carefully with Harris for now even after his solid showing in his last outing.

Allen owns a .420 average and 1.055 OPS over 80 plate appearances in 17 games with Triple-A Las Vegas since being optioned May 3.
Allen has eight extra-base hits (six doubles, one triple, one home run), 12 RBI, eight walks, two steals, a hit-by-pitch and 16 runs, making it an all-around dominant showing for the previously struggling shortstop. Allen has also upped his walk rate from a 6.5 percent figure he'd mustered during his time with the Athletics to 10.0 percent, while his strikeout rate has seen a welcome reduction from 24.7 percent to a modest 15.0 percent. Nevertheless, the A's already saw this type of drastic dichotomy from Allen last season, when he thrived in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League but produced strikingly different numbers at the major-league level. With Max Schuemann putting together a solid showing (.261 average, .709 OPS) at shortstop with the big-league club, Allen doesn't appear to have a viable path for a return to the Athletics for the time being.

Gelof's bat is coming around -- he's 7-for-23 (.304) with two homers and three doubles during his six-game hitting streak. Prior to the streak, he went just 7-for-51 (.137) across his first 14 games back from an oblique injury. Gelof is slashing just .193/.254/.331 on the year, adding five homers, six steals, 13 RBI and 18 runs scored over 44 contests, but he'll get every chance to continue starting at second base for a team that has struggled to be competitive.

Miller was strong, aside from a 102.5 mph pitch that Julio Rodriguez took out of the yard in the ninth inning. This was Miller's first outing since his blown save versus the Rays last Thursday. The flamethrower has been tagged for eight runs (five earned) over his last 7.1 innings, but he has three saves and a blown save in that span. For the season, he's up to 12 saves in 13 chances with a 2.28 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 52:11 K:BB across 27.2 innings.

Estes (2-1) allowed one hit and struck out five without walking a batter over 6.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Mariners on Wednesday.
Estes retired 18 straight batters to start the game before giving up a leadoff double to J.P. Crawford in the seventh inning. This was easily the best start of Estes' young career, and he's now allowed one run or fewer in three of his five outings in 2024. He's still at a 4.67 ERA, but his 0.96 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB over 27 innings are more indicative of the quality of his pitching. He's projected to make his next start on the road in San Diego.

A strained back kept Boyle on the shelf since early May, but he was activated after making three rehab starts with Triple-A Las Vegas. He allowed four earned runs in 5.1 total innings while striking out six batters and walking six over the three starts. Boyle had turned in a 7.16 ERA through seven starts with the Athletics prior to being deactivated, so he'll stick around at Las Vegas and will likely need to show improved control over multiple outings before he gets another look in the big-league rotation.

Boyle (back) started Triple-A Las Vegas' win over El Paso on Tuesday, firing three scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and issued two walks while recording three strikeouts.
Boyle worked up to 58 pitches -- 35 of which he located for strikes -- in his second consecutive scoreless multi-inning rehab outing. The right-hander appears to be ready for activation based on his solid body of work over that pair of starts, and an injury-riddled Athletics starting rotation would undoubtedly benefit from his return.
