Horrorfilms komen in alle soorten en maten, maar degene die je echt graag bang willen maken volgen vaak hetzelfde patroon: in de eerste helft een reeks angstaanjagende scènes en in de tweede helft het mysterie uitpluizen en het kwaad verslaan. Meestal is er wel wat ademruimte om bij te komen van de spanning. The Boogeyman weigert dit patroon te volgen en houdt de horror er tot aan het einde in. De pauzes tussendoor zijn erg kort - en dat werkt.
Sadie Harpers moeder is onlangs overleden, en ondanks dat zij en haar jonge zusje daar heel graag over willen praten, stuurt hun vader, zelf nota bene psycholoog, ze naar een externe therapeut. Hij zelf krijgt een man aan de deur die vertelt dat zijn kinderen zijn vermoord door een monster in de kast. Kort daarna beginnen ook in Sadies huis vreemde voorvallen plaats te vinden, met name rondom haar zusje.
Dat korte gesprek tussen Sadies vader en de hulpzoekende indringer is het enige waar het om draait in het korte verhaal van Stephen King. De makers van deze film gebruiken het als basis voor een plot en borduren er op voort. Van Kings verhaal uit 1973 is al twee keer eerder een korte film gemaakt, en een toneelstuk. Voor deze nieuwe verfilming, met een speelduur van ruim anderhalf uur, is er op geslaagde wijze een hoop bij verzonnen.
Ten eerste gaat het over meer dan alleen een monster onder het bed. De boeman staat symbool voor de duistere, vretende kracht van rouw. Huize Harper is ondergedompeld in verdriet waar de enige overgebleven ouder niks aan doet, omdat hij nog niet klaar is om de waarheid volledig onder ogen te zien. Die etterende infectie wordt weergegeven in de vorm van een afgrijselijk wezen dat zelfs de stem van hun overleden moeder kan nabootsen. Tot aan het einde zit dit thema er dik in.
Ten tweede is het gewoon zwaar griezelen geblazen. Er wordt kundig gebruik gemaakt van alle goedkope trucjes om de kijkers dieper in de stoel te laten wegzakken. Rust om daarvan bij te komen is ze niet gegund. Dat veroorzaakt de onprettige ervaring die een horrorfilm teweeg hoort te brengen.
Behalve zenuwslopende shots van donkere hoeken en gangen is de stem van het monster hoogst verontrustend. Het is een soort demonische impressie die varieert tussen een feilloze nabootsing van iemand die de personages kent en dierlijke klanken uit de diepste krochten van de hel. Het idee om zoiets te horen in het duister van de slaapkamer is pure horror.
Waar het verhaal dat extra laagje heeft, zijn de personages wat vlakker. Het jongere zusje is gewoon een klein meisje dat graag slaapt met het licht aan. Vaderlief is iets complexer, maar komt een stuk minder in beeld. Sadie is de tiener die geen zin heeft om op school gezien te worden als 'dat meisje wier moeder is overleden'. Er is een schoolgenoot die zo asociaal tegen haar doet dat het flauw en ongeloofwaardig is, maar het gaat echt over de schreef dat Sadie dit kreng even later uitnodigt voor een klein feestje bij haar thuis.
Een ander klein minpunt is de beeldkwaliteit van de film. Hij oogt alsof er niet genoeg budget was voor een fatsoenlijke camera en/of belichting. Het voelt niet functioneel korrelig, maar goedkoop. Hip en flashy gedoe is nergens voor nodig, maar de shots zijn vrij nietszeggend.
Waar dit monster vandaan komt en hoe het te bestrijden is, komt amper aan bod. Geen gemis, want het is er gewoon en dat is dat. Het zou de film onnodig langer hebben gemaakt en de spanning in de weg hebben gezeten. Er is maar een moment waarin Sadie op onderzoek gaat en het huis bezoekt van de man die sprak over de boeman. Dat voegt een beetje toe aan het plot, maar het is vooral sterk dat zelfs dit moment een milde nagelbijter is.
De vraag "wordt dit de engste film van het jaar" komt bijna maandelijks voorbij op filmsites. Ooit een effectieve marketingtool, nu een loze belofte. Op de eerste dag van het volgende jaar kunnen we beslissen welke film die eer krijgt. The Boogeyman is een kanshebber, want eng en effectief is hij zeker.
