Dropping driver's education, raising fees for participating in sports and cutting back on field trips are among the ways the school board may use to produce a balanced 1994-95 budget. Because state aid has been frozen for three years, the board is looking to find $500,000 in cuts.

40 years ago (1984)

An inmate suit by 11 prisoners last summer to force air-conditioning of the Crow Wing County Jail took on a new look as the Minn. Civil Liberties Union asked to enter the case on behalf of the inmates. The MCLU called the lack of air-conditioning “cruel and inhuman punishment.”

60 years ago (1964)

Searchers dragged Mille Lacs Lake for the body of a fisherman who drowned yesterday noon. He and two others were anchored a mile off Garrison when a big wave swamped their boat. Exhaustion caused him to lose his grip on the boat, but the other two hung on for seven hours before being rescued.

80 years ago (1944)

A rifleman who had never flipped a pancake before has volunteered to become a cook so he could stay with his Ranger Infantry outfit after his legs gave out. Tech 5th Grade Harold Westerholm of Brainerd joined the Rangers when first formed two years ago in Ireland. He fought in the landings in N. Africa, Sicily and Italy.

100 years ago (1924)

The Men's Club of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church will hold its fourth annual pike supper on May 23. The men were out last evening catching pike and had good success. They will go again tonight and tomorrow to ensure enough fish for the large numbers expected to attend the dinner.
